Top 10

When purchasing a used vehicle there are some things that are obvious and others that buyers don’t think about until it’s too late.  Here is a check list of items the top 10 things buyers miss when shopping for a car in Arlington Washington.

Paint Job

Look at the condition of the paint job as well as the shape and smoothness of the paint application. If you notice any bumps or irregular spots they are due to past body work and they probably indicate past accidents. The paint job will often give clues into the body condition of the vehicle and by paying attention you will be able to weed out vehicles with poor bodies.

Under the Hood

Lift up the hood and look at the condition of the vehicle underneath. If it is extremely dirty or rusty don’t expect for the vehicle to be in good shape because they probably didn’t maintain it and it may have even been involved with accidents.

Hoses and Belts

While the hood is up visually inspect both the hoses and belts for wear. If you notice cracks or excessive wear the parts will need to be replaced and there could be more serious problems underneath.

Upholstery

Examine the condition of the upholstery and dials and gauges of the car before committing to purchase it. Not only can you figure out whether or not it is in good shape by doing this but you can get an idea of how the owners took care of it as well.

Heat and AC

Turn on the car and run both the heat and the AC to make sure they work properly. While they could be easy to fix, they could also be expensive depending on the actual problem.

Mileage

Look at how many miles the vehicle has before you decide to buy it. It doesn’t matter if it looks like it is in excellent shape if you find out it has 300,000 miles on the engine.

Test Drive

Drive the vehicle down the road to find out how it performs while it is actually moving. This lets you know about any hidden problems.

Brakes

While driving it stomp down on the brakes to slow down quickly. Pay attention to any vibration or pulling to either side of the road, this indicates problems with the braking system or alignment.

Engine

Look closely at the engine block for any dark stains that indicate leaking problems.

Oil Resevoir

Remove the oil cap and look for any foam on the underside of the cap. That indicates problems with the head gasket and you will be looking at a big expense down the road that will probably keep the vehicle from being worth the money.

By taking into consideration these 10 things to check when buying a used car in Arlington you can make sure that you aren’t getting ripped off. There is nothing worse than paying for a vehicle and having it start to fall apart a little while later. Do your research and get something that is going to last.

Buying Used Cars

ford truck

Here is the number one used car sold in the Arlington/Seattle Washington area and why.

It is no surprise that the number one selling vehicle in the country is also the most popular vehicle in Arlington, the Ford F-150. This vehicle has been around since the 1940’s and it has remained one of the top selling vehicles in the country since that point in time.

When you think about the overall climate and location of Arlington it is no surprise that the F-150 is a very popular vehicle in the area.

Arlington is prone to snow and adverse weather for a good portion of the year. The small truck is great when traveling across poor roads that most cars would have a hard time with. On top of the weather conditions you also have to think about the people who live in the surrounding areas.

Since it is a largely rural area it shouldn’t be a surprise that trucks are very useful to the citizens of Arlington. With plenty of yard work and farms in the area trucks are great for hauling supplies back and forth from stores to homes. Without a dedicated truck many people wouldn’t be able to take care of the work that they need to do and they would have to resort to renting vehicles or relying on help from their friends or family members.

Reliability

One of the best features of the Ford F-150 trucks are their reliability. It’s very common to see owners driving trucks that are 20 or 30 years old because they are still in running order even after all those miles.

Their parts are pretty easy to track down and you can get replacement pieces for one of the trucks for a very affordable rate. As long as the truck is maintained it should last for a very long time, and Arlington residents understand that.

Versatility

On top of being reliable there are just so many different F-150’s to choose from. There are special edition versions of the truck. There are also different models from different years that they came out and in each of the same generations of the truck there are different trim options, different bed lengths and even different cab sizes.

Whether you want a small work truck, or you want a vehicle that is going to provide transportation for your friends and family you can get what you need with one of the F-150 models out there.

The F-150 is a great truck option for anyone who doesn’t want to get 6 miles to the gallon with one of the more robust trucks. It has more than enough power to tow effectively, and a large enough bed to take care of most work that you would need a truck for. Most people believe that it is about the perfect size for a truck, and that is why it is the number 1 used car sold in Arlington as well as much of the United States.

KAR-MA-intenance

Maintenance for northern states such as Washington.

Geographic locations have different effects on used cars. Here are 5 maintenance tips for used cars along coastal communities such as Seattle Washington

Tire Pressure

One of the most important tips is to keep your tire pressure at a consistent level all the time. During the winter months it is very important that your tires are inflated properly without being at a pressure that is too low or too high. In order to check the pressure just press a pressure gauge onto the stem coming out of the side of the tire. You may have to remove the stem cap in order to gain access to it. Maintaining that pressure will help maintain a good level of traction as well as help extend the life of the tires and improve your gas mileage.

Clean your Car

During the winter months one of the bet things that you can do for your car is to clean it regularly. Taking your car to a professional cleaning place once a week, or doing a thorough cleaning yourself is a great way to extend the life of the body of your vehicle. Most of the time, when there is snow on the ground the lay down salt to help take care of any possible ice that may form. This salt is picked up by your tires and spread around the underside of your used car’s body. The salt slowly breaks down the metal on the underside of the car and you get rust that will lead to holes later on.

Check Brakes Often

Your brake pads are the only thing that keeps you from running into the other cars in front of you. Unfortunately stopping any of the used cars in Arlington creates a huge amount of friction and that friction breaks down your brake pads pretty quickly. By checking to make sure that you have a decent amount of brake pad left you can prevent any possible accidents. The health of your pads becomes even more important during inclimate weather

Change the Oil

If you want your engine to continue to run strong you have to change the oil regularly. Over time oil picks up particles from the engine and it becomes dirty. In order for the oil to continue to function well consistently you need to put fresh oil in your vehicle at least every 5000 miles. This will help take out all of those bad particles while keeping your engine going strong.

Check Your Belts

Without the timing belt your vehicle would not be able to run. Over time that belt will wear out and it is very important that you replace it before it wears out completely or you will be stuck with a vehicle that doesn’t want to go anywhere. Check on the belts every 25,000 miles or pay a professional to take a look at them for you. Typically it is good practice to change those belts every 50,000 miles if you want the vehicle to keep running strong.

Volkswagon GolfVW logo

Testing a Forced-Circulation System

If general investigation shows that water is not circulating properly, the cooling system should be checked completely.

The degree of overheating should first be determined. If the cooling water begins to boil after a ten minute drive, serious trouble is indicated. After all not everyone in Edmonton or Fort McMurray can afford a new Mazda.  True its always nice to gaze and admire new cars  and trucks and dream of them once we win the lottery. However, if only a drive at high speed, the steady pulling of a full load, or a long drive on a hot day produces the boiling, the expert service and expert mechanic’s diagnostics & diagnosis to find the trouble usually is local and easy to repair.

If soon after the engine is started the water begins to boil, proceed as follows: grasp the upper radiator hose tightly with your hand while the engine speed is being accelerated. If the water pump is circulating the water properly, the hose will bulge noticeably as engine speed is increased. If no outward pressure is felt, either the pump is defective or the passages are badly clogged. For engines in which the hose cannot easily be squeezed, a test may be made by first draining the water from the system, removing the upper hose connection and substituting a longer hose. Then connect the longer hose to the cylinder-jacket outlet only. Insert a plug in the end of the upper hose fitting, or nipple, of the radiator and place a large funnel in the filler opening. Refill the cooling system with water. The hose substituted should be about one foot longer than that disconnected at the header, and its upper end should be held over the funnel. With the engine running at a speed corresponding to 20mph, a steady stream should flow from the hose and, as the engine speed is momentarily accelerated, a full, solid stream should flow into the funnel.

If a good stream of water flows into the funnel, the pump is in working order and the trouble lies in the radiator itself or in the fittings of the engine. While this test is progressing, it is advisable to cover the upper end of the hose with your hand to see if the pump creates a pressure against your hand. The object of this test is to detect a possible slipping of the pump impeller.

If no pressure is felt against the hand, or if the circulation seems to be below normal, the trouble may be in the thermostat, remove the screws holding the cylinder-jacket outlet in place and remove the outlet. The thermostat can then be lifted out. With the thermostat removed, replace the water outlet and repeat the test. If the water now flows freely, the thermostat is defective and should be replaced. If there is no improvement with the thermostat out of the engine, the trouble may be in the pump, which should be removed and examined carefully. If the impeller is loose on the shaft, or the pump otherwise is defective, make necessary repairs and replacements and reassemble the pump to the engine. If the water still fails to circulate freely, the passages through the engine block or the radiator itself are blocked up.

By testing the cooling system in manner described, you should be able to determine the exact cause of no circulation of water in the system. With a pump system, once circulation has been verified, the next step is to check whether the engine itself overheats. A preliminary check may show the circulation to be normal, yet the engine may still overheat. In this case, the cause of overheating must be found by the process of elimination: by checking every part of the system until the source of trouble is located.  Download adobe acrobat reader here.  Or here.  or here.
